When you think of an operating system that isn’t Windows of macOS, you probably think of Linux. You may think of some other variant of Unix, but chances are pretty good its one of those. That said, Linux and Unix aren’t the only other operating systems.
ReactOS is a free operating system that is compatible with Microsoft Windows applications with the goal to complete binary compatibility for Microsoft Windows.ReactOS aims the kernel of Windows NT to be compatible with, making it possible for programs and drivers designed for Windows NT and its successors such as Windows XP, Windows Server 2003 and Windows 7 can run. ReactOS 0.4.11 is now available as the newest version of this open-source operating system re-implementing the Windows APIs with a focus on binary driver/application compatibility. With this being the first release since November's ReactOS 0.4.10, there are a fair amount of changes to find in this. That said, ReactOS isn’t a version of Windows, nor is it meant to be a clone of Windows. ReactOS is an entirely different operating system. That said, ReactOS can run Windows programs. As a matter of fact, the developers aim for full binary compatibility with Windows. Archimedes screw pump design manual. In a nutshell, that means it is meant to be a non-Windows OS that can run. Dryriver writes: So I just discovered the ReactOS 0.4.4 Alpha. It seems like this is basically a free, open source Windows replacement in the making. Does anyone have serious experience with ReactOS? Do you think that ReactOS will ever reach the point where you can basically say 'bye bye' to Mic.
There are other options going back, like QNX or BeOS, but there are also other options now – you just haven’t heard of them. One of these operating systems is ReactOS.
ReactOS is Windows.ReactOS has the same identical architecture as Windows, for maximum compatibility –Windows drivers require a Windows kernel –Many applications (firewalls, antivirus, media players, PDA sync software, etc.) come with special drivers.Windows architecture is quite different from Linux and not as well known. Page 1 of 2 - ReactOS - posted in Windows 2K/XP/2003: Hi guys. Ive recently downloaded 2 versions of ReactOS, ReactOS-0.4.7-Live.iso and ReactOS-0.4.7.iso and am trying to boot the ISO using Grub2. Googleing indicates booting freeldr.sys but one ISO doesnt have freeldr.sys, it has setupldr.sys. Ive tried using multiboot and chainloader but am getting nowhere.
What Is ReactOS?
ReactOS has more in common with Windows than it does Linux. That said, ReactOS isn’t a version of Windows, nor is it meant to be a clone of Windows. ReactOS is an entirely different operating system.
Reactos Vs Windows Xp
That said, ReactOS can run Windows programs. As a matter offact, the developers aim for full binary compatibility with Windows. In anutshell, that means it is meant to be a non-Windows OS that can run Windowsprograms.
ReactOS also has system requirements, so you can run it onan old spare computer to try it out. You don’t even need to install it to tryit.

How to Create a ReactOS Live CD
You can create a standard ReactOS installer, but if you justwant to try it out, a Live CD works great. This lets you run it withoutinstalling it.
To get started, download the ReactOS ISO file from the project’s website. To burn the CD, you’ll need a utility called ImgBurn.
Launch ImgBurn, then select “Write image file to disc.” Select the ISO file you downloaded earlier, then insert a black CD into your burner. Click “ISO to CD,” and wait for the file to burn.
Now reboot your computer. To boot from a CD, you may have to hold down a key. In most cases, this is F12. Boot from the ReactOS live CD, then choose LiveCD from the menu.
How to Create a ReactOS Live USB Drive
Technically, you can also opt to create a live USB driveinstead of the CD. That said, you may not be able to run it.
A Word of Warning
At the time of writing, you can’t boot from a USB due to a bug in ReactOS. You can create the drive just fine, but you’ll get a black screen on boot.
That said, that may not be true when you read this. You maywant to check the ReactOS website to verify whether live USB drives work.
Creating a Live USB Drive
To create a live USB drive, you’ll need to download the live CD ISO as above. Instead of burning it to a disc, you’ll instead use a program like Rufus to create a USB stick.
We already have a guide on creatinga live USB stick with Rufus. You can follow that guide using the ReactOSimage file.
Conclusion
If you have an old machine you want to breathe new life into, ReactOS is a great option. It’s also a good choice for fixing up older machines for friends or relatives who want to run their old Windows programs. ReactOS won’t solve all their problems, but it’s worth considering. Download bootsect windows 7.
That said, maybe you’re a Windows user looking to move to something else without buying new hardware. If that’s the case, take a look at our list of the best Linux distributions for Windows users.

ReactOS is an open source effort to develop a quality operating system that is compatible with Microsoft Windows applications and drivers.
Console Applications
ReactOS supports a limited range of console (text based) applications, and support for more is increasing as we expand our console libraries. Notable examples of supported console software are GCC (which means that ReactOS can be compiled on ReactOS) and the GNU Midnight Commander (text-based file manager).
GUI Applications
The Graphics Device Interface (GDI) and User32 is not yet complete. The VGA driver that comes with ReactOS also has some way to go, although the standard Microsoft VGA driver can be loaded. Test applications such as WinHello and WineMine demonstrate current capability.
Driver Support
At the moment, work to support 3rd party drivers (Microsoft Windows compatible) is restricted. The focus is more on only basic drivers that are written in conjunction with the various kernel facilities.
Other Subsystems
The JOS project has agreed to use the ReactOS kernel to develop a Java subsystem, to help bring their goal of a Java based operating system to realization.
Although we approached several groups that wish to implement an Open Source OS/2 operating system, none of them wanted to use ReactOS as a kernel. There is, however, at least one person who has joined the project that is interested in developing an OS/2 subsystem for ReactOS.
Although there is interest in a DOS subsystem, we have not yet moved to get interested people working on such a system.
